Alfaia Barravento 16" Compensado Maracatu rope-tensioned Surdo.

North East Brazilian Surdo or Alfaia 'Compensado'.

The traditional rope-tensioned, hide-headed drum used in Maracatu Groups in North East Brazil.

From the workshop of Maureliano Barravento in Recife, Pernambuco, these drums are the real thing, where we learned the craft of making, roping and tuning the drums.

The shell is plywood with special unique marquetry decorations on the outer ply. The bearing edges are sanded and reinforced. Tuning hoops are thick, continuous two-layer ply. Heads are wood-mounted goat hide. Tuning is via rope.

The drums are supplied with a pair of Maracatu beaters, also made in Recife.

We have spent time in Pernambuco with Maureliano where we learned how to tune and saw how these instruments are made. Purchasers will be sent a link to an Alfaia assembly and tuning Vimeo film.
